Welcome to our Spring Chick Photo Tutorial!

In addition to the written instructions, here are some photos to help you assemble your Chick.

Cut out the Spring Chick templates (you can glue them to thin card, before cutting, for long lasting use!)

Fold your felt in half & draw round the chick body & wing, with a pencil.

Cut out the felt pieces, by cutting just inside the pencil lines.

Pin a wing to each body, making sure you have a mirror image.

Stitch the wings to the bodies, leaving the pointed end unstitched for the wings to flap! You can use normal sewing thread & a running stitch.

Colour the chick’s beak with a felt tip pen, have a practise using your felt off cuts & put a scrap of paper underneath.

Mark the chick’s eyes, with a dot, using a felt tip. Remember felt tip ink bleeds out on felt!

Stitch around the eye dot’s using the embroidery thread, to make the eye stand out.

Fold the ribbon in half & place on one of the chick body pieces, to create a hanger loop, at the top & 2 legs dangling from below. Pin or glue stick this in place. Place the other body piece on top, sandwiching the ribbon.

Stitch around the chick, starting from just below the tail, going towards the head, with normal sewing thread. Making sure to securely stitch the hanger ribbon in place. Stop 5 cm from where you started sewing, leaving the thread attached.

Put small amounts of stuffing into the chick – this could be made up of your felt off cuts cut into small pieces, stuffing from an old cushion or an old holey sock (clean) cut into small pieces! Push them in using your finger or a pencil.

Finish sewing the chick closed & tie knots in the leg ribbons to create feet.

And now you have your very own Spring Chick!

Embellishments

  • After cutting out the felt body & wing pieces, you could add some decorations, before sewing it together.
  • Any beads, sequins, coloured threads, glitter – there’s lots of options!
  • You could swap the leg ribbon for something different too.
